When our client briefed us, they spoke about balance. Mornings in a bright family home, evenings in a calm retreat. That idea of an equinox became our north star. We shaped two interlocking volumes that meet around a sheltered court so the house can open to light and views while protecting privacy.

We workshopped the plan with the family at our studio, moving blocks on a scaled site model to set sightlines from kitchen to play room to garden. Together we tested the “arrival” at dusk, tuning the height of the foyer and the rhythm of vertical slots so light becomes part of the architecture. The façade pairs warm timber with cool travertine, cut in repeatable modules to control cost and detailing. Deep reveals, screens, and high-performance glazing temper the sun. Native planting, a shaded water rill, and greywater irrigation create a microclimate that makes the terraces usable most of the year.
Inside, public rooms form a flowing sequence around the court, with quieter suites tucked away above. We mocked up joinery and exterior lighting on site so the evening glow felt soft and even. Equinox Residence is the result of many hands and many twilight visits, a home that finds a steady balance between openness and sanctuary, day and night.
