Zaha Hadid Architects, in collaboration with Sharjah’s Urban Planning Council, has revealed plans for Khalid Bin Sultan City - a visionary new city that embodies the future of sustainable urbanism in the Middle East. The masterplan features a linear oasis, a verdant central spine that acts as both ecological infrastructure and community gathering space. Inspired by desert morphology and fluid movement, the architecture seamlessly blends organic forms with engineered precision.
Water conservation is paramount, with integrated greywater recycling, solar-powered desalination, and native-plant landscaping forming the backbone of the sustainability strategy. ZHA’s vision introduces autonomous mobility, smart infrastructure, and zero-emissions zones - turning the city into a model of regenerative development.
Phase one of the development will focus on mixed-use residential clusters, schools, and cultural venues, with a projected completion date of 2030. Subsequent phases will introduce technology zones, vertical farming districts, and digital governance systems - making the city a living testbed for climate resilience.
Khalid Bin Sultan City represents a deeply considered response to the challenges of building in a fragile desert ecosystem.
It fuses sculptural ambition with ecological mindfulness - a hallmark of Hadid’s best work. With its integration of technology, culture, and sustainability, the project elevates Sharjah’s global architectural profile.
